Welding Engineer or Technologist
Description
Welding Engineer with 5+ years of welding related experience, including metallurgical engineering, in a construction, fabrication, or repair facility with a B.Sc. in materials/metallurgical engineering or similar technology diploma with more experience. Develop and qualify welding procedure specifications (WPS) and related procedure qualification records (PQR), supervise and document welder qualifications, interact with welding department (manufacturing and repair), work with welders, suppliers, 3rd party NDE personnel, to meet the user's requirements.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Review project specifications for welding process, base metals, filler metals, heat treatment, and NDE requirements; select appropriate WPS, and if required, qualify a new WPS.
- Submit material and process selection recommendations to ensure attainment for design objectives and service application.
- Review order packages and advise the Project Manager of potential materials, welding, heat treatment, or NDE problems.
- Develop and qualify new WPS/PQR when required.
- Develop welding procedure data sheets when new WPSs are qualified.
- Review project specifications for cost exceptions.
- Submit the selected WPS(s) and supporting PQR(s), welder qualification records, and any additional information (e.g., weld maps, additional NDE or inspection, cost exceptions, etc.) to the Project Manager for approval.
- Periodic reviews of the company’s welding practices, as related to codes, standards (e.g., CSA W47.1), and local regulations.
Requirements
- B.Sc. in metallurgical/materials engineering, or welding/materials engineering technology with additional experience.
- Minimum of 5 years welding related experience, including welding metallurgy experience, in a construction, fabrication, or repair facility is required, although 5 to 10 years of experience is preferred.
- Advanced knowledge of the weldability of ASME P-No. 1, 3, 4, 5A, and 8 base metals is required, including selecting the welding process, filler metals, heat treatment, and post-welding NDE; although weldability knowledge of P-No. 6 and 10H would be an asset.
- Advanced knowledge of welding inspection and related NDE methods (MT, PT, UT, and RT), including ASME Sec. V, are required.
- Code experience must include ASME Section V, VIII-1, IX, B31.3, AWS D1.1 or CSA W59 and W47.1, CSA B51; other related codes would be an advantage (e.g., ASME Sec. I, B31.1, API 650, API 1104 or CSA Z662).
