Please be aware that registering in this ASME Section IX - Welding Codes and Metallurgy course assumes that you have prior training of Welding Fundamentals, as described in this CASTI course.
Who Should Attend
Inspectors, welders, welding supervisors, quality control personnel, technologists, and engineers involved with new welding procedure and welder qualifications for new fabrication, repairs, maintenance, and inspection for pressure vessel or piping.
Welding Examiner: this course is also designed to prepare candidates for Paper 2, Paper 4, and some of Paper 3 (see Note 1 as follows). See Welding Examiner Candidates below.

Learning Outcomes [+]
Participants will be able to:
- understand the need for safety codes and local jurisdiction safety regulations applied to welding pressure equipment
- navigate ASME Section IX welding qualification code paragraphs to be able to identify the requirements for procedure and performance qualifications
- understand how materials are assigned P-Numbers, F-Numbers, and A-Numbers
- apply essential, nonessential variables, and supplementary essential variables for procedure and performance qualifications
- discuss and apply common construction code welding requirements for ASME Section IX WPS qualification using:
- ASME B31.1
- ASME B31.3
- ASME Section I
- ASME Section VIII-1
- understand the technical fundamentals for many of the ASME Section IX rules by learning the base metal and welding metallurgies that they are based on, including:
- reasons for preheat, QW-406
- reasons for PWHT, QW-407
- different weldment zones, AWS A3.0

- role of alloying elements, residual and unspecified elements in steel and affect on weldability.

Workshop #1: ASME Section IX, Table QW/QB-422, P-No. and Group No.
- Attendees will develop the basis for establishing P-No. 1, Groups 1 to 4 as they appear in Table QW/QB422.
- This workshop will be reviewed several times during the course to further explain ASME Section IX requirements.
Workshop #2: Reviewing and Understanding Test Results for Procedure Qualification (QW-483)
- Review a set of test results including:
- ASME Section IX requirements for Test Reports, and
- ASME Construction Code Requirements versus ASME IX Requirements.
Workshop #3: Practicing with ASME Section IX, Section I, Section II Parts A and C, Section VIII-1, B31.1, and B31.3
- As an exercise as part of developing a new WPS, each attendee will participate in this workshop to practice using:
- ASME Section IX,
- base metal specifications: ASME Section II Part A,
- filler metal specifications: ASME Section II Part C,
- construction codes: ASME Section I, Section VIII-1, B31.1, and B31.3.
- At the completion of the Workshop, the instructor will interact with all attendees by discussing each Welding Variable, Filler Metal Selection, and Construction Code requirements as they relate to developing a WPS.

Knowledge Requirements
The CSA W47.1 "Suggested Areas of Study for Welding Engineers" are covered by the two following CASTI courses that are approved by the Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB):
- ASME Section IX - Welding Codes and Metallurgy (this course), and
- ASME-AWS Codes and Standards Welding Fundamentals
The engineer(s) must be designated by a company, certified or applicant prior to applying for the Qualification of Welding Engineer.

Learning Assessment
Learning self-assessment is performed through discussions, problem solving exercises, and workshops.
Required Code Documents
All participants must have a copy of the ASME Section IX code.
Welding Examiner candidates must have the documents referenced above. (See Welding Examiner Candidates.)
Course Notebook
A digital course notebook will be provided to all participants by CASTI (printed hardcopy not available).
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Hours
Participants will receive a digital CASTI Certificate of Completion, awarding 32 CPD hours, for attending all 4 days of the scheduled training. Note: CPD (Continuing Professional Development) hours are equivalent to PDH (Professional Development Hours).
About the Instructor
John E. Bringas, P.Eng. is the Founder and President of Codes and Standards Training Institute (CASTI) since 1998 and CASTI Publishing Inc. since 1992. Mr. Bringas has been a professional engineer in metallurgy and materials since 1976 and has developed, written, and instructed over 40 codes and standards training programs worldwide since 1989.
Mr. Bringas has practiced metallurgical and materials engineering in the steel making, foundry, failure analysis, heat treatment, welding, visual inspection (equipment and welding), NDE, refinery, oil sands, pipeline, petrochemical, and power generating industries.
He has also been certified as an API 510, 570, 653, 571, 577, and 580 inspector, an AWS Certified Welding Inspector, an Alberta In-Service Pressure Vessel Inspector and Welding Examiner, NFPA Fire Engine Inspector, and a CGSB certified NDE examiner in UT and RT.
