Objectives
To improve safety, reliability, and minimize liability of fixed equipment by learning common damage mechanisms in the oil upgrading and refining, petrochemical, power generating, and other related industries, as covered in API RP 571-2020 and ASME Construction Codes are the primary objectives. The roles of the engineer, inspector, and NDE examiner in identifying affected materials and equipment, critical factors, appearance of damage, prevention and mitigation, inspection and monitoring will be covered while introducing the fundamental science and engineering concepts of service-induced metal deterioration and failure mechanisms. Topics covered in this course will also assist API 571 ICP exam candidates preparing to write the certification examination.
Who Should Attend
Engineers, inspectors, designers, and experienced maintenance personnel who are involved in designing, operating, maintaining, repairing, inspecting and analyzing pressure vessels, piping, tanks and pipelines for safe operations in the oil upgrading and refining, petrochemical, power generating, and other related industries. As an option, this course will also assist API RP 571 ICP exam candidates preparing to write the certification examination (at no additional charge).
Professional Development Hours (PDHs)
Each participant will receive a digital CASTI Certificate of Completion with 32 Professional Development Hours (PDHs) for attending all 4 days of the scheduled training.
Course Outline
- instructor-led discussion of damage mechanisms listed in API RP 571-2020 and ASME Codes, including:
- learning the fundamental science, engineering principles, and good practices of the following 5 major damage mechanism categories:
- corrosion by metal loss
- environmentally-assisted cracking
- metallurgical damage and embrittlement
- high-temperature corrosion by diffusion
- mechanical damage and related corrosion
- API RP 571-2020: Damage Mechanisms Affecting Fixed Equipment in the Refining Industry
- ASME B&PVC, Section I, Appendix D: Design Guidelines for Corrosion, Erosion, and Steam Oxidation of Boiler Tubes
- ASME B&PVC, Section II, Part D, Appendix A: Issues Associated With Materials Used In ASME Code Construction
- ASME B&PVC, Section VIII-1, Appendix E: Suggested Good Practice Regarding Corrosion Allowance
- ASME B31.1, Appendix IV: Corrosion Control for ASME B31.1 Power Piping Systems
- ASME B31.3, Table A-1 Notes and Appendix F323 Materials - Considerations for Deterioration in Service
- reviewing over 30 CASTI Study Tables© instructionally designed for comparing similarities and differences of each API RP 571-2020 damage mechanism within each category;
Optional: API RP 571 ICP Exam Preparation (at no extra cost)
- if you are preparing to write the certification exam for API RP 571 ICP Corrosion and Materials, this course also includes:
- 3 online practice exams available after the training course
- each practice exams includes: 110-questions (closed-book), answer key with references to API RP 571-2020 paragraphs
Required Code Documents
All participants must have the API RP 571, 2020 Edition during this course. You can purchase API RP 571, 2020 edition when you register for the course.
Course Notebook
A digital course notebook will be provided to all participants by CASTI (printed hardcopy not available).
